Mr. Enter's Notebook: Night Light by MrEnter Mr. Enter's Notebook: Night Light by MrEnter
Writers: "Gah! Writing an eleven minute episode is so hard. I know, maybe have complex enough plots to fill in seven minutes or even four minutes!" *cue Rise and Shine and Waiting.

Actually, I do think that this episode might have been what inspired season 5 to have some shorts, because it honestly feels like one. Although, this episode could have been salvaged. You know in the beginning where Spongebob thought he saw monsters in the dark? If they kept on that note and maybe have like a Rock Bottom in Spongebob's house this could have worked. Hell, he could have even purposefully called in Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy to help fight these monsters in his head. Oh, and Patrick running off into the sun was actually a good joke. Hell, I could even tolerate some of the screaming. But, when you have a four-minute plot stretched out to eleven minutes, it just doesn't work.

This is strange; Season 5 is the "short season," and I wonder what made these guys want to make this 11-minutes. This work better as seven minutes at maximum, and several scenes can be edited out or edited down to fit that time slot. Regarding this episode; I didn't find this episode atrocious-worthy, but not that good either.

A majority of the nonsense Nick spews out really could have been simply edited into a better episode, but as we all know:

Nick: ugh, editing is too hard, and we need these episodes out now. (to editors) Eh... keep that episode like that, no one would care.

At least "The Original Fry Cook" had better writing and a good lesson, despite Krabs being somewhat of a jerk... Thanks for making me see things in a new light, Mr. Enter.

Well, My overall this episode was just LACKLUSTER! and NOTHING SPECIAL! the only thing I liked about it was the ending when Patrick ran up into the sun.

This episode sucked. It kind of felt like a rip off of an episode I've seen from another show.

OT: If you could, I would like to see you do an admiral animation of the Wild Thornberry's episode "Forget Me Not" and the same for some episodes of Rocko's Modern Life as well.

All I could think of when I watched this episode was how annoying SpongeBob was acting!  And while being afraid of the dark is understandable I don't think I've ever met anyone as afraid as SpongeBob was here.

I'd like to see you do the animated atrocities notepages on the pre-movie duds (also, if you could - please watch "Dumped" again, just so that we can all figure out... is it an animated atrocity?). I don't know, this episode always felt like one of the pre-movie duds. It has a few good enough gags, but the episode lacks enough substance so that it's in the range of bad episodes like "I'm With Stupid" or "The Great Snail Race". What do you think?

Whether its an atrocity of animation is debatable, but it defiantly a pre movie dud and deserves a review, because it fails as a SpongeBob episode.

Yeah, Dumped is a pre-movie dud... and anything that scores ten or more points on the Atrocity notepages is an atrocity by MrEnter's standards, so I think that he could consider Dumped an Animated Atrocity.

I'd love to see an Animated Atrocity on The Great Snail Race. Please tell me I'm not the only person who finds that to be worse than A Pal for Gary!

...how?!
I mean, The Great Snail Race isn't a good episode... but A Pal for Gary was far worse! How do you hate The Great Snail Race more? I mean, A Pal for Gary is the most infuriating things I've seen. Not the worst thing, but the most infuriating. I mean, maybe you had higher expectations so you didn't hate it as much... I could understand that, but how aren't you infuriated by any of the things in A Pal for Gary far more than you do any other episode?

I dunno. Maybe it's because Great Snail Race came out when I was a little kid, and I had two or three pet cats, and it showed Gary graphically exploding on-screen? We've seen Spongebob act incredibly oblivious and stupid, but I can't think of any episode, before or since, that's portrayed him as being genuinely selfishly abusive. In A Pal for Gary he was well-intentioned and trying to do the right thing, which is in-character for him. In Great Snail Race, he abused his beloved pet just for the sake of one-upping his neighbor. Yeah he apologized, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

This episode never struck me as that bad. It's more watchable for me than a lot of the other "bad" episodes you've reviewed. On a side note, did PieGuy's season 5 review inspire you to start score-carding all of the bad season 5 episodes?

This one is definitely more watchable than most of the others, but it's kind of like Rainbow Falls in that the story is just a mess.

And yeah, it did.

This is just another really annoying and forgettable episode.

I really believe that Mermaid man saying why he and Barnacle Boy are here at the end is a forth wall joke about how they were shoe horned in into this at the last moment.

Mark Hamill,WHY!?

I liked this one! But whatever, opinions are opinions. Dance!

What's weird is that a few days ago, I posted my Top 10 Most Overhated Episodes of SpongeBob, and both this and Stanley S. Squarepants made it. And within three days, you've uploaded review cards to both of them!

What saddens me most is that they wasted Mark Hammill. It's a shame, because this episode had some genuinely funny moments and like you said, this episode could've worked, but it's so stretched out and sloppy.

Ah, Rock Bottom. One of the few episodes from Spongebob I actually liked (Personal taste, not going to bad mouth the older part of the series). I travelled a lot as a kid, especially with one grandparent 150 miles away, and another 250 miles away (short enough to drive, but still 2-3 hour drives). Often times, it'd be at night, and the roads always felt so desolate and forboding, the people so strange (truckers and bikers, on the road 24/7 and freaky as hell to a little kid). Even once we got there, my Grandma cindy lives near train tracks in a town of less than 500, nearest city being 35 miles both ways. Never got much sleep up there.

I just don't like this one. One of my big pet peeves is sloppy story structure and it definitely seems like someone didn't edit this story well. Either that or they were in a rush trying to get this done before the deadline.

  • Spongebob: Are these night lights guaranteed to keep the creepy creatures of the dark away?
  • Clerk: If I answer "Yes", will you leave the store soon?
I do admit that part did make me laugh, but other than that, this whole episode really did feel like it was slapped together in 10 minutes at most.

I'm honestly on the fence with "Karate Island". It has its problems, yes, but hey, at least Sandy was able to do something and have a large role (I think that was her last big role in the show before she was shoved into the background), and Pat Morita was Udon. At least it delivered better than "The Big One", which I'm honestly waiting for a review of if he plans to do it. Not even Johnny Depp could save it.

True. I honestly have to think about it in order to remember it, and even then, I don't remember everything. The first thing I tend to think of is the climatic battle between Udon and Sandy, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

So they can't fill in 60-22 minute specials, 11 minute episodes, or 4-7 minute shorts. Something tells me that these guys need better plots.
